Chairman Thompson Statement on New Zealand Mosque Attacks
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the terrorist attacks at mosques in New Zealand:
“What happened in New Zealand was an act of terror and hate. Our prayers are with the people of New Zealand and everyone affected by the mass shooting attack. However, words of sympathy have no meaning if not backed up by action. We must all work together to counter domestic terrorism, including those who feed it and allow it to spread. The terrorism in New Zealand underscores that we must not try to ignore the domestic terrorism threat. I hope my colleagues and the Administration agree with me that we must do better.”
This week, Chairman Thompson sent a letter to the FBI and DOJ to request long overdue briefings he intends to hold this month on the constantly evolving domestic terrorism threat. Chairman Thompson intends to hold hearings this spring on domestic terrorism.
